Remote Working

In short, it’s the ability to work remotely from home, cafe, beach, just about virtually anywhere in the world using a laptop, tablet or even mobile phone. Remote working isn’t a new concept. Many companies have been taking advantage of it since early 2000s.

How is this possible?

Thanks to technology advancement, such as supported software by major developers, encrypted connections, fast Internet, and other security protocols.

Pros:

  1. It’s environment friendly and money saving. A business can lease a much smaller office space thereby minimizing overhead costs of office rental, utility and other expenses. Electricity is one of the heftiest items. Think of the power usage from AC units, computers, monitors, televisions, projectors, printers, coffee machines, refrigerators and so on. Interior design such as furniture and decorations are expensive items as well.

  2. Much easier for new businesses/startups to launch compared conventional office setup.

  3. The ability to work from the comfort of your own couch.

  4. Time. It gives employees more personal time gained from not having to travel to the office. In addition, employees could sleep longer. The thought saving an hour to two hours from the road encourages gratitude that can lead to productivity.

  5. Not having to deal with aggravation from morning traffic makes for a better mental state (less stress) that could also lead to increased performance at work.

Cons:

  1. Less physical interaction from colleagues. Some people work better when they are physically together.

  2. Loneliness. Or it could get lonely. This depends on the individual. Some work better alone, have sharper focus.

In order to enable remote working, several things need to be put in place. It’s a one-off setup, requiring very minimal to none maintenance. There are many products and network designs to make this a reality. It depends on the size, budget and existing equipment of the company.
